When this IT Architect discovered that Supercomputers are not just for Chess & weather, I realized the possibilities that open up for businesses.

I picked up this example from architect's post.

For example, IBM's Center for Business Optimization recently helped a company that had more than 70,000 SKUs (stock keeping units) with an inventory problem. Normally, finding the best way to manage this number of products would have taken six hours. With a supercomputer, it took 17 seconds.

What this implies in more practical terms is that the company, instead of waiting overnight for results, now gets them immediately. More importantly, because the results are available immediately, the company can now insert different variables into the program to find an even better way to optimize its inventory.

I being this business rules guy, am thinking only of business rules technology, but I can visualize the tremendous opportunities that commercially viable supercomputers can open up for normal business operations.

Check these reports about the state of customer service that I gathered at the eweek research central.

  1. Loyalty programs are an underutilized strategy
  2. Customer Insights do not drive innovation and product and service design

And again, look at this. I was writing about how organizations can precisely define their business policies to be able to meet their business goals.

Analyzing Business Rules for Business Performance - Rule Analytics

Now, to be able to do an accurate analysis, you might need to be able to simulate/run your policies against volumes of data, which a supercomputing infrastructure can reduce to seconds. So instead of spending days to feed the tuned policies back into the system, you could do it in seconds.

Now, what do you say to that??

Interesting connection you have made between supercomputing power and rules engines. Thanks for making me think!
